Women Sewing LWR

October 4, 2015

Thank you for your support of the St. Paul LWR Quilting Group. This year we sent $200 toward shipping costs and took to the pick-up point at Faith Lutheran Church in Whitehall 163 quilts, 39 health kits, 15 sewing kits and 6 pounds of soap. The congregation and your friends support with monetary donations and leftover material and used bed sheets are greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Larry Schilling for the use of his enclosed trailer, Jim Moore for driving and to Jim and Harold Brown for stacking and restacking those 64 boxes we took to Whitehall.

We look forward in the next year to making more quilts, many of which are ready to pin and sew together. Your continued support with “throw-aways” like used bed sheets or cotton curtains, and cardboard boxes the size of paper boxes or banana boxes (or slightly larger) to pack 2-3 quilts would be appreciated. Donations can be placed in the post nursery room off the downstairs fellowship hall.

We have a position open for you – no sewing knowledge required. Join us on the first and third Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

St Paul Relief Quilt Group

For the Fall 2024 Quilt Ingathering, St. Paul was able to provide 10 fabric kits and 82 quilts to ship to Lutheran World Relief.  With the help of our new quilting members, in addition to our established quilters, we were able to go from 24 quilts in June to 82 quilts in October.

We also want to thank the congregation for your support in monetary donations for quilt shipping, fabric pieces and used bed sheet donations, and donations of cardboard boxes to ship the quilts in.

We appreciate your support and your prayers for our small group of quilters.

In the 80-year history of LWR, they have always shipped quilts and kits to international locations during disaster needs.  In late 2024, a decision was made to provide some shipments to US locations with the majority of the shipments still to international locations.

Two shipments were made in the US – 150 quilts and health kits to the 7 ship crews stranded in the Port of Baltimore after the bridge collapse and a second shipment was made in October to the citizens in the SE US suffering from the effects of Hurricane Helene.

We have already started quilting for our 2025 ingathering and you are invited to join us the first and third Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. in the lower-level fellowship hall.

St Paul Relief Quilts

The St. Paul Quilting Group is working toward the fall quilt ingathering in October 2023. The Quilting Group would like to ask the congregation to consider donating the cost of the shipment for one quilt at the cost of $2.25 during the month of September.

Should you be able to donate for this, these contributions may be placed in the offering envelopes or given directly to Treasurer Duane.  Any checks should be made payable to St. Paul Lutheran Church and designated for LWR.  These funds will be sent to Lutheran World Relief as part of our Fall Ingathering response. Your participation is always greatly appreciated and helps ship quilts to those in need around the world.  This cost has not increased in many years of shipping quilts.

Relief Quilts

For many people, giving something up for Lent is like a New Year’s Resolution – it only lasts a short period of time.   This year during Lent, add something instead.  Add the gift of shipping one quilt with Lutheran World Relief for $2.25.

Mark the gift amount on your offering envelope. Make any checks payable to St. Paul Lutheran Church and designate for LWR.  Your gift will be sent to Lutheran World Relief during the Fall Ingathering of Quilts.

Thank You From Our Relief Quilt Ministry

The Quilting Group would like to thank the members and friends of the congregation for your generous support of the Mission Quilt Shipment Fund during our Lent initiative.  Your support is greatly appreciated and will allow many quilts to be shipped to their future destinations.

Thank you for the great response to the March 31st collection for Faith Mission/Choices treats. Included in the delivery were cookies, cakes, frozen ready-to-bake cookies, Easter treats for the children and large cans of vegetables. Thanks also for the cash donations and to Diana for collecting and packaging. Another thank you goes out to those who have been collecting Panera donations each Wednesday though out the past years and delivering them to VanBuren Shelter.
None of these events happen without YOUR help!
Reminder to collect can tab pulls for Ronald McDonald House and used eyeglasses

Lutheran World Relief’s Mission Quilts

During times of COVID, natural disasters, conflicts, and other health crisis continue.
Lutheran World Relief’s Mission Quilts are still requested and shipped to areas throughout the world.
To help in this, the St. Paul Quilting Group is asking the congregation members to consider the cost of shipping one mission quilt – $2.25 – as part of your Lenten journey this year.
These contributions may be placed in the offering plates or given directly to Treasurer Duane Dellinger.  Any checks should be made payable to St. Paul Lutheran Church and designated for LWR.

St. Paul Quilting Group

On Sunday, September 26, 2021, the St. Paul Quilting Group will have the annual quilt blessing during the church service.  This will be in advance of the Central Ohio Quilt Ingathering where the Mission Quilts we have sewn will be shipped to Lutheran World Relief.
During the COVID restrictions, our small group has continued to make quilts in our homes and dedicating these to God’s glory is an important part of the quilting process.  As of July 15, we have 183 quilts to share with those in need and more in process.
One of the things that we ask from the congregation is monetary support to defray the cost of shipping one quilt to their final destination in other countries around the world.  As in past years, LWR has managed to keep the shipment costs low at $2.25 per quilt.
Should you be able to sponsor at least one quilt, please include in your St. Paul offering with a line note showing WELCA funding.  Donations may also be given directly to treasurer Duane Dellinger. Any checks should be made payable to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Your support is greatly appreciated

ST. PAUL LWR QUILTING GROUP

Even with social distancing and the coronavirus pandemic, the dedicated quilters in the St. Paul LWR Quilting Group are continuing to make mission quilts that will someday be shipped to Lutheran World Relief for distribution around the world.  Social distancing and exchanging items in the parking lot at St. Paul may not be what “quilting day” used to be, but it’s our occasional meeting day now.

Our quilting is done in parts – one person cuts and designs the quilt squares, another person sews them together, another person sandwiches the quilts layers together, another person sews around the edges, another person ties the quilt layers together.  Then there are the specialty cutting, ironing, and sewing people.  Then they get boxed and inventoried for the eventual shipment – whenever LWR is able to arrange a local ingathering.

What made us sad was to read about the damage to three 40-foot shipping containers that were destroyed in the explosion in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4.  These containers had 22,000 mission quilts, maybe even some that came from St. Paul, 100 cartons of school supply kits, 300 cartons of personal care kits, and 125 cartons of baby care kits.

These items were to be distributed in Lebanon by LWR’s partner, Anera.  These supplies were to help 24,500 men, women, and children in Lebanon, many refugees from Syria and Palestine.  The estimated cost of this loss was $624,000 – all donations by Lutheran congregations.  After the explosion, an additional 300,000 people are estimated to be without shelter and in need of these supplies and other basic living items.

The small things we do, help many.  The small things you do, can help many more.  Visit LWR’s website at www.lwr.org for more information.
