An Epiphany Message from Rev. Aaron Baughman (1/6/21)

For example, in Mexico today is called Three Kings Day (Dia de los reyes magos) is celebrated with fireworks, cake, and other festivities. SO may Christ also be revealed to you on this day!

 Living Tumultuous Water

As we begin a New Year within a tumultuous time I wanted to share a hymn with all of you. This coming Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus and the gift of living water. The late Sylvia Dunstan who was a congregational minister and prison chaplain in Canada, wrote this hymn in 1991:

1    Crashing waters at creation,
ordered by the Spirit’s breath,
first to witness day’s beginning
from the brightness of night’s death:

2    Parting water stood and trembled
as the captives passed on through,
washing off the chains of bondage—
channel to a life made new.

3    Cleansing water once at Jordan
closed around the one foretold,
opened to reveal the glory
ever new and ever old.

4    Living water, never ending,
quench the thirst and flood the soul.
Wellspring, source of life eternal,
drench our dryness, make us whole.

This hymn is a reminder to me that tumultuous crashing water is what supports life. In fact, the reason that we hear the term ‘living water’ so often is because at the time of Christ, ‘living water’ was any moving water such a stream, river, or brook and people understood that drinking from such water was much safer than drinking from the calm, quiet water of a lake or pond that would be an easy place for parasites and bacteria to grow.

Not only did living water provide drinking water, but it also provided freedom. Think about the Israelites, like in the hymn that were set free from slavery thanks in part to the motion of water. It was also the ‘living water’ of the Jordan, in which Jesus was baptized.

SO, as much as we long for the calm, quiet things to be our source of life, I had an Epiphany today: Jesus provided living water. In fact, Jesus walked out into living water to be baptized. So 2021 is here and it is a tumultuous time, but new life abounds in this kind of water.
