A Midweek MessageMarch 24, 2021 Hello Everyone, Can you believe that next week is Holy Week? It’s hard to believe that Lent is almost over. This week’s midweek message comes to us from Gaylord Odegaard who was in Lutheran Ministry in Cincinnati, Ohio and Muncie, Indiana from 1969 – 1977. Gaylord and his wife, Lynn, joined St. Paull in 2020. They have two daughters, Kate, who is an Elementary school teacher and Anne, who is a retired Coast Guard Officer. They also have four granddaughters. Thank you Gaylord for this message! Don’t forget that we have one more Lent midweek service this coming Wednesday at 7:00PM. Holy week services are on Thursday at 7:00PM and Friday at 7:00PM. -In Peace Rev. Aaron Baughman (interim pastor) “After leaving the synagogue he entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her. Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them. As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them. Demons also came out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.] At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.” So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea. “ Luke 4:38-44 While Jesus felt that preaching the good news of the kingdom of God was more important even than healing those who were in some way sick he always had empathy for people with sickness. We also might feel sorry for and have empathy for any sick person in our congregation and among our friends. Aging often brings with it heart and circulation diseases, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Remembering the elderly who are suffering with illnesses, and those who experience circulation problems and cancer way before they might be thought of as aged is of great importance to them. Write cards, say prayers for those on a list you might have, do some kind acts on their behalf, contribute to causes. And they will receive strength many times, just experiencing the many forms of empathy. Never discount the goodness of others in your living. While the power might not be equal to what Simon’s mother-in-law knew, if you have done some kindness to or for a sister or brother in the faith or for a friend, it may fortify the positive attitude to heal in the receiver. As they say, every little bit helps – from doctors, other health professionals, from medications, from friends who care and from our own attitude toward getting well. – Gaylord Odegaard Lutheran Ministry in Cincinnati, Ohio and Muncie, Indiana from 1969 – 1977.
